6/HAUNTED DREAM

Every time I close my eyes
I see the silhouette of your tilted head
Twenty fingers, two hearts joined
Weight of a love I’ve never felt

For when I wake up, all I see
Is the phantom of a haunted dream
No one stroking my empty hand
You’re slowly fading in the sunbeams

In my dreams, I conjure cities of lights
Suburban nostalgia lost in translation
Desolate basements and empty swings
A long-lost utopian civilization

I drive through my town to try and find
The tempestuous world of my nightmares
Where can I find those empty promises
My perfect dreamland is never there

A cottage at the edge of nowhere
It’s empty inside, just sunshine and flowers
I sit on the grass and taste the rain
Eternal poetry before it turns sour

I float into the distance like the wind
No fat on my bones, no skin to tear
My soul nestled in the wispy clouds
All my secrets to the sky laid bare

I read and I watch as the world turns perfect
Breathe in glitter and breathe out gold
Your life falling in place like gorgeous dominoes
I chase the end before I grow old

A long-lost lie disappears in the air
How will I chase my worn-out fantasy
When will all this art reflect my life
You’re still staring all dreamy
