18/STREETLIGHT

Twinkling eyes from your beaming face
Maybe it was how your day had gone
A curious joy I’d never understand
In all its innocence, I’d try to absorb

The discreet dance in your delicate step
Must have been to that 90’s song
You’d try to pretend you feel nothing
Your eyes betraying you all along

You’re scared of the lurking strays
And the more sinister figures abound
Invisible friends and visible ghosts
But in that hanging kindle drowned

Under that streetlight, on that path
We find the self we’re trying to hide
The daily conundrum left in the dark
The darker egos don’t try to survive

Micawberish poets could call it chemistry
We both know there’s something to be said
For the way our hearts can twist together
While not a drop of blood been bled

You tell me your life’s a lavish rabbit hole
Of love, pain and deep deep hurt
These mad hatters seem to run you dry
Tea parties of heartbreakers and flirts

We start to find our way back home
I try to tell you, that all this time
You’ll find a soulmate maybe one day
But your strange love will always be mine

Under that streetlight, on that path
We find the self we’re trying to hide
Desperate as I hold on to the moment
Desperate for a little more time
